Hi guys!
Fun fact about myself/cool story: I recently got a pair of glasses because of my eyesight, but within seconds of receiving my new pair, I dropped them… Had to apologise multiple times.
Plan
Today and tomorrow we’ll be looking at Ephesians chapter 2 verses 1-10 (personally, on my phone, I read the ESV version of the Bible so it may be a little different to those of you who use different versions).
However, for today we’ll just focus on verses 1-3 as it is quite long.
Let’s pray before reading His word.
Prayer
Scripture
Ephesians 2:1-3
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Make sure to read this passage a few more times for an in-depth understanding!
Analysis and interpretation
Verse | Analysis and interpretation |
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins | This verse is basically explaining that we were all once spiritually “dead”, due to our sins, before meeting Christ. It seems that we are described this way due to the fact that Jesus and our fellowship with him is like our spiritual “food”(John 6:27); just as any living thing will die without food, the same goes for our spirit. To add to this, there are actually multiple references, throughout the Bible, of us being spiritually “dead” before our acceptance of Christ1. Check them out! |
in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— | This verse is explaining that we all once followed Satan, who is the “prince of the power of the air”. It is explained that he is currently working to gain more worshippers (sons of disobedience), who deny and denounce God. There are a few interpretations on why Satan could be referred to as the “prince of the power of the air” in this verse; however, there are two that are generally most accepted. 1. “The air” could refer to the invisible realm above the earth where Satan’s demons move and exist. 2. “The air” could refer to our fallen world. The reason why he is only described to be the “prince” of these regions (instead of King or Lord) is because there is only one true King, God. For further reading visit2 |
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. | This verse explains to us that we once worshipped our own sinful desires, doing what we want, instead of doing what pleases God. |
Summary
These verses essentially highlight our sinful nature and how rebellious we are against our divine creator.
Reflection
Try identify any “passions of our flesh” and “desires of the body and the mind” that gets in the way of your relationship with God. This could be an addiction, habit, friend, or anything. Try find ways to distract yourself every time you get tempted and pray about it, asking for his guidance.
Prayer
Heavenly father, we are sinners. We sin again and again. Thank you for saving us, regardless of this, and loving us unconditionally. Please guide us and bless us. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In your name we pray, Amen.
